The Shroud of Turin is a centuries-old linen cloth
that bears the image of a crucified man, whom many believe to be
Jesus of Nazareth. The Shroud is the single most studied artifact in
human history.
|
In
1975, Lee Hunt was inspired to portray the face on
the Shroud of Turin. Inspired by a photographic negative of the image, she meticulously painted the face, complete with
bleeding wounds and closed eyes.
However, when the artist removed an inadequate varnish from the
finished portrait, she saw to her horror that the entire top
layer of paint had also been extracted. With months of work
demolished in an instant, Lee was crestfallen... but not
defeated. She re-created the image as the
portrait of a living man. |
